ID the Mystery Tree



So I've been walking the WV property identifying the trees and shrubs, but one tree has stymied me until today. Here are some pictures of the leaves and bark, can you guess the species? It grows up to about 30 feet, in the sandy, well-drained upland soil:

Looks like a hickory to me.

Black tupelo (or black gum) it is. That didn't take you long, it took me a good week of poring over books to figure it out.

Very interesting tree with a reputation for amazing fall colors.

So, given the very interesting hardwood mix there at your place, a feller might like to know what your turkey populations are like?
