Believe it or not, I had a prof in college who did exactly this. We'd pull up alongside a retention pond and watch for snappers. After spotting sign he'd run full speed in and disappear...sometimes for a good long while underwater...then pop out dragging the turtle with him. Couple differences: he'd grab them by the back of the shell; it was for science, not dinner; and there wasn't a snarky farmer chuckling or a rebel yell, just me shaking my head wondering what the hell I'd gotten myself into.
We pulled a turtle outta the crick in KY for culinary science and learned a few important lessons 1). follow the Joy of Cooking advice and feed the snapper ground beef for a few days to dissipate the pond scum taste 2). according to the elders, "...reptiles don't stop moving 'til the sun goes down". I found this out after the fact when the shell-less creature continued to jerk under my chef's knife...not fun. I couldn't eat the soup, but heard it was good, 7 different kinds of meat and all. Thanks for bringing back the memory.
