Kate the Great

Some of you know this already, but I may as well say it here as well--my setter Katie has bone cancer. She's probably got until the first week or two of June, then that's gonna be it. But it probably explains a bit why I'm obsessing about the fox hunting--I need the distraction.

It's off to St. Louis this week for Ethics in Action and the Hunter Education conference. See you all when I get back.

I will mourn Kate. First grouse, on a beautiful fall morning in Maine, etc. Many great memories.

Oh Jim. I know these final hours/days are the worst. She is a great dog.

Jim, I still vividly recall the day you brought a young Kate to hunt near my home. I remember setting up for a shot in the Washing Machine covert, where that woodcock I took in front of Kate was my first wild bird over a point.

I also recall you both returning home with me for refreshments thereafter. Kate lay on the sofa with me, her tortured tail at one end, her lovely head and soft eyes luxuriating in my lap while I spoiled her with caresses. I have never before or since been so seduced by a pointing dog.

You have been fortunate to own each other.
