ok jim. were you actually getting your news from cnn, or was this the result of a google search: "dog" + "salmon" + "crossing road" ?
Heavily engaged in current research on "angling spaniels." This was all I came up with.
And, further irony, the fish looks to be a dog salmon (Oncorhynchus keta).
