The Bounties of Autumn

Decided on a kid hunt this weekend rather than a solo grouse trip, for a number of reasons. We went for squirrels, on the Canoga frontier. Not only did we mange a few fat Gray Squirrels, we also made a fantastic score on a Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus).

We can shoot squirrels here during small game season, but nobody does. Ours are small red squirrels.

Are squirrels good eating?

My son and I went duck hunting today, the season opened yesterday. I got exactly two shots, but we returned home with nothing.

I have had some pretty yummy squirrel dishes (when I was in Kentucky in the army and later in college). We are having it tonight as an appetizer-- an apple cider and squirrel dish of some kind. Sure to be posted to:

I used the .410 side by side and sure enjoyed it.

What's the make of that .410? I have a Baikal .410 s/s which is a fun little gun to shoot.

It is a "Ranger"... a Montgomery Wards 60s-70s gun... made by Savage I think.

Had a magnificent meal at the Tidball ranch: Squirrly chickent of the woods ragu on croquettes; butternut squash velvet; chutneyed venison tenderloin; and a marvelous Red Newt Cab Sauv. Elegant, lean flavors of the land, perfectly prepared.

you've got it all there -- kids, squirrels, and edible wild fungi. Quite an outing!
