Grouse Camp 2010

Now that we're making our fall plans and since Cagey was complaining last week that there is as yet no grouse camp plan for 2010 (I quote, "Is there even going to BE a grouse camp?" he asks), I am promulgating the following dates for grouse camp 2010:

The week of the Columbus Day (October 11) holiday, or roughly the period from Friday October 8 through Sunday October 17.

I know the interesting part of the conversation remains, whether to hunt Maine or Wisconsin. I will remain silent on that question for now. Let the planning begin.

lookit the size of those friggin' grouse . . .

Well thank goodness we're past "why I hunt". Sounds too much like work.

Re camp, that week is good for me, and I will commit to a camp SOMEWHERE. I will again apply for moose tags: if we are drawn, then I'd go to Maine. If not, I could stick my finger in the wind and be quite pleased with either choice.

Important question - who has our camp flag? Did it get left at Old T, or did someone bring it back to Cornell?

While I'd like to say I'm definitely in, we all know that will depend on a number of factors. Besides the fact it will be less than a month after the BIG DAY, there's also a potential trip to Japan in the works!

So set it up and I'll do my best to be there.

That week would work for me, Jim. The second, third, or last week of October are still options on my calendar. (The sooner we select a week, the better).

sounds good guys. don't know about the flag, Rich you took the Cornell flag, no? The GC flag may have gotten left at Old T.

Camp... doubtful for me. October is just about all booked up with work travel for either me or the missus.
The flag... is probably wrapped around a pair of size tens....

I'd like to throw Tug Hill into the mix for Grouse Camp. I know it's a bit close to the Cayuga Lake cohort to be considered an exotic location, but it is huge and, on good years, is as good a home for grouse and woodcock as any. Period. Andy should be able to give us the bird forecast.

I haven't heard many reports from Jim, Keith or Rich about their scouting of the plateau. Jim can confirm that there's a lot more than Gruntley. When I was sampling soils there, I was amazed at the amount of state land and the numbers of grouse and woodcock. I think I left Jim my marked up copies of the Jefferson, Oswego and Lewis County soil surveys. The combination of Worth and Gulf soils is the key.

My likes what Pete said... not that I'll be able to partake Columbus Day week. Youse could even do a mini-camp/long weekend @Tug Hill area ('cept of course Mr. Safari-Jenny, but he's history in 199 days anyway). One could even do a day trip there, if not a longer stay.

Grouse Camp 2010 is not likely for me, but a couple days at Tug Hill (mini-camp?) might be doable. The week leading up to October 16th is a no-go (my friend Dave is - also - getting hitched).
