More on lead in Venison

DEC now has a web page with general information for hunters and meat processors about lead fragments in hunter-harvested venison. See http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/48420.html. The page includes links to NYS Dept of Health web pages about lead exposure and links to research from Minnesota.

For health related cautions and advice, we are directing readers to the NYSDOH.

Thanks for your review and comments on this issue.

None of these articles on lead fragments in meat talks much about shot placement other than that shooting a deer in the hind quarters is probably a bad idea. I recently reduce a small doe to possession -- in the interest of having a clean, lead-free carcasse I shot the animal in the head... with a .30-06.... after which it bore a resemblence to an exploded pumpkin. It resulted in a beautiful clean carcasse, but -- if you have the choice -- a neck shot will result in a similar carcasse, and you'll be able to let the kids look at your deer. My boys seemed happy enough examining a few squirrels and a woodcock.
